چکیده
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that may accompany either acute or chronic liver disease. It is defined as a disturbance of central nervous system function due to hepatic insufficiency and includes a large spectrum of clinical manifestations such as decreased intellectual function, personality disorders, alterations in level of consciousness and neuromuscular dysfunctions. According to the consensus conference of the 11 World Congress of Gastroenterology, it can be classified into 3 major clinical types:

Detecting Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy in an Endemic Country for Hepatitis B: The Role of Psychometrics and Serum IL-6
BACKGROUND & AIMS It remains unknown what the prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy is in Taiwan, a highly endemic country for chronic viral hepatitis infection. It is also unclear whether abnormal serum cytokine levels can be indicative of the presence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy. We aimed to standardize the tests of psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score and predictive value o...

INTRODUCTION Minimal hepatic encephalopathy refers to a mild neurocognitive impairment not detectable by clinical examination that can be present in cirrhotic patients. AIM To determine the prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy in a secondary healthcare center in Northern Portugal. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted. Cirrhotic outpatients were included. EXCL...
متن کاملIdentification of minimal hepatic encephalopathy in patients with cirrhosis based on white matter imaging and Bayesian data mining.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE White matter abnormalities have been demonstrated to play an important role in minimal hepatic encephalopathy. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether WM diffusion tensor imaging can be used to identify minimal hepatic encephalopathy among patients with cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our study included 65 patients with cirrhosis with covert hepatic encephalopathy ...
متن کاملOral glutamine challenge improves the performance of psychometric tests for the diagnosis of minimal hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis.
BACKGROUND & AIMS Minimal hepatic encephalopathy is difficult to diagnose due to the lack of a gold standard test. Oral glutamine challenge has been found to increase blood ammonia in cirrhosis leading to secondary cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of oral glutamine challenge in improving the psychometric performance for the diagnosis of minimal hepatic encep...

The term minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) refers to the subtle changes in cognitive function, electrophysiological parameters, cerebral neurochemical/neurotransmitter homeostasis, cerebral blood flow, metabolism, and fluid homeostasis that can be observed in patients with cirrhosis who have no clinical evidence of hepatic encephalopathy; the prevalence is as high as 84% in patients with hep...

INTRODUCTION Hepatic encephalopathy is defined as brain dysfunction caused by liver insufficiency and/or portosystemic shunting. Symptoms include nonspecific cognitive impairment, personality changes and changes in consciousness. Overt (symptomatic) hepatic encephalopathy is a common complication of cirrhosis that is associated with a poor prognosis. Patients with hepatic encephalopathy may pre...
